💡 Tip #1: Stay Within Your Lane
Only take cases that fall squarely within your recent, relevant clinical experience. If you haven’t done it recently, don’t opine on it. Your credibility hinges on this more than your credentials.
💬 Tip #2: Ask for Feedback
Once a case wraps, ask the hiring attorney how you did including what worked well and what could improve. It shows professionalism and opens the door for repeat business (71% of experts get most of their work from attorneys they’ve already worked with).
🛑 Tip #3: Don’t Rely on Medical Training Alone
This is the big one.
Legal standards have their own definitions, especially when it comes to concepts like standard of care, causation, and prognosis. If you assume your clinical instincts are enough, you may inadvertently hurt the case, or your own reputation.
I’ve seen great clinicians fail as experts because they didn’t realize they were applying the wrong lens. That’s why I always recommend getting trained before you write your first report or testify in court.
